From meetings under the blue clock, encounters down the market, making memories with the family, falling in love on nights out, Stoke-on-Trent City Centre, our Hanley, is full of secrets and of stories lost in time.
But today its voices are ready to be discovered, its stories waiting in the brickwork, ready for you listener.
Welcome to The Secret City, an audio adventure through Stoke-on-Trent City Centre.
The Secret City was a self-led audio walking tour in Summer 2021 through Stoke-on-Trent City Centre, exploring the stories of nine city centre locations through time. From waiting for Santa to appear outside 1940s Lewis’, to get your tummy pierced in 1998 Hedonism, The Secret City invited local people to listen again to their town centre.
A huge thank you to funders National Lottery through Arts Council England and Stoke-on-Trent Business Improvement District (BID) who made The Secret City possible.
You can still get a taste of The Secret City by listening from home. Settle into a comfy armchair, pop on your headphones and take a listen to the nine audio stories from the trail below, alongside The Secret City map on the right.
